Conscious coupling: loss of public promises of a life-long bond? An exploration of authenticity and autonomy in commitment processes across contemporary long-term relationship forms

Strong mutual commitment is typically conceived of as involving a public promise life-long bond, but social theorists have posited that external relationship anchors are being replaced with private meaning commitment. This narrative analysis semi-structured interviews ten White British couples in long-term relationships (15+ years) different forms (married, civil partners, cohabitants) explores the contemporary relationships. The findings indicate loss importance attached to promises, couple instead guided by two distinct narratives, one which rejects future-oriented promises bond. Contrary individualisation theories, however, trajectories continue be shaped influences. study raises questions regarding growth an alternative moral framework for and suggests theoretical conceptions reconsidered light changes practices.
